Need to sort out on board WLAN it seems:

gayatri:/etc/modprobe.d# ip link
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state
UP qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:1e:8c:2e:0f:51 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN qlen 1000
    link/ether 40:10:18:00:00:2d brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
4: wmaster0_rename: <> mtu 0 qdisc noop state DOWN qlen 1000
    link/ieee802.11 00:1e:8c:2e:0f:51 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
5: wlan0_rename: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN qlen
1000
    link/ether 00:1e:8c:2e:0f:51 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
6: eth0.1 at eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue
state UP
    link/ether 00:1e:8c:2e:0f:52 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
7: ppp0: <POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1492 qdisc
pfifo_fast state UNKNOWN qlen 3
    link/ppp

This tries to tell me to rename the WLAN interface, it seems.

I can't yet use them.

gayatri:~# ip link set wlan0_rename up
RTNETLINK answers: No such file or directory
gayatri:~# ip link set wmaster0_rename up
RTNETLINK answers: Operation not supported
gayatri:~# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 no wireless extensions.

wmaster0_rename no wireless extensions.

wlan0_rename IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=0 dBm
          Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

eth0.1 no wireless extensions.

ppp0 no wireless extensions.

gayatri:~# iwlist wlan0_rename scan
wlan0_rename Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

Is there any way to disable WLAN completely?

Does modprobe -r b43 do the trick? I know that with ipw2200 I have to use
the rf_kill switch.

Hmmm, renaming it via modprobe doesn't seem to work:

gayatri:~# iwconfig 2>&1 | grep wlan0
wlan0_rename IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:""

And rf_kill doesn't seem to work either with that driver:

gayatri:/sys# iwconfig wlan0_rename
wlan0_rename IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=0 dBm
          Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

gayatri:/sys# find -iname "*rfkill*"
./class/rfkill
./module/rfkill
gayatri:/sys# cd class/rfkill/
gayatri:/sys/class/rfkill# ls
gayatri:/sys/class/rfkill# cd ../../module/rfkill/
gayatri:/sys/module/rfkill# ls
parameters
gayatri:/sys/module/rfkill# cat parameters/
cat: parameters/: Is a directory
gayatri:/sys/module/rfkill# ls parameters/
default_state
gayatri:/sys/module/rfkill#

Well something for another evening it seems. For now I will blacklist the
module. No hurry at all since I did well without WLAN for more than a year
already ;-).

Ciao,
