I notice now that qemu-img preallocs all the virtual space:

qemu-img info /root/test.qcow2
image: /root/test.qcow2
file format: qcow2
virtual size: 5.0G (5368709120 bytes)
disk size: 788M
cluster_size: 65536

qemu-img convert -f qcow2 /root/test.qcow2 sheepdog:test

dog vdi list
