No, you are free to use xattr if you really need it. In the past we had
a try to remove xattr usage because we thought that it was not really
necessary for storing non-frequent referenced value in xattr. I don't
want assume underlying file system capability, but if there is a reason,
I don't deny it.

By the way, what do you count object for?
