My last patchset doesn't address new problems in that set, just trying
to move the mess that the join code is a bit forward.  But I have to
admit that I don't think my incremental process to deal with the join
issues works very well.  I'm fine with reverting it for now while I'll
come up with a proposal to change the architecture in a much bigger way.
