Hi Yunkai,

I have a big series in this area pending that fixes races in the join
code.  Can you wait with this patch a bit?  I think your patch will also
work nicely ontop of the changes I did, but doing it this way around
will make rebasing a bit easier.

I'll try to get it out in a few hours.
