Just to further clarify here, the kernel can help only for the "L" part of ITL and mostly for luns based on block devices. Where generally, luns are many times based on ram based sources (tmpfs, ramfs, etc) or even null which is critical when one attempts to measure the performance of the SAN (e.g iscsi/iser) protocol part of TGT.
