Thanks, first of all, Falko's version worked after some necessary adjustments for our environment, although now I am back to my previous version. And thanks to Thomasz, who answered me yesterday and advised me to use the debug output. Doh! I learned a little about the <check /> statement. I, for some reason believed, the installer is not started if one of the check commands delivered a positive result. Obviously that is not the case. All of them have to do that! And in addition to that, AFTER the install has finished, ALL <check /> statements are evaluated, so by just adding more and more checks I actively prevented WPKG from detecting a successful install.
