Windows version (2000,XP,Vista) can be obtained via registry:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProductName

and Service Pack:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\CSDVersion
