how about reading from the eventlog? the installer is writing to the eventlog 
what software it is currently trying to install anyway, so why not take the 
info from there?

and its not really such an important bit of information for end users but i've 
been asked by a couple administrators already if it isnt possible to display 
this bit of info. and so far i had to tell them that i already filed a feature 
request for it but havent got an answer yet.
