I use what comes in debian sid: python 2.5.5.

It seems to be a standard library module[1]. I wonder why you have:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
    From struct import pack, unpack
              ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

And not:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
    from struct import pack, unpack
              ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Maybe the line ending?
