Yes there is a small, but noticeable difference. Setting a system variable on
the client system is a distributed setting which needs to be updated on all
nodes in case of change.

Using a central setting like a wrapper script started on server or variables
within profiles/packages can be changed quickly on server side without having to
update all clients.
