This is not a workaround, this is the recommended way.

Only 64-bit applications are supposed to be installed in %ProgramFiles%, 
32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows are supposed to be installed in 
%ProgramFiles(x86)% exclusively.

This has to do with the file system redirection and the change of 
variables for 32-bit applications, see
