Sorry, I made it sound as if samba was the culprit, but of course samba
can possibly handle this OK, I think, or maybe it is a smb protocol and
authentication issue?

Anyways, it appears to be in fact at least a MS windows xp limitation
AFAIK. Once you have a drive mapping or any other network connection
(like a service for example) to a samba server, which you can
interactively check for by issuing 'net use', from a user workstation to
the server I cannot find a way to make another connection to the same
samba server from the same workstation using different user credentials.
I have sofar taken this as a given limitation. Is there another way? As
far as I am aware one is given the infamous MS error:

System error 1219 has occurred.

Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user,
using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous
connections to the server or shared resource and try again..

Is there another way? I would love to know how to have more than one
user on the same workstation having active network mappings against a
single samba server?

Regards,
