It's not setting null but instead it's setting a variable and it's content is an 
empty string - "".
Well I've tested this on an older XP VM and I was able to reproduce the issue. 
Seems to be fixed on Win7 (my default test environment).

I've implemented a work-around which will simply append another empty string to 
the environment before applying it which seems to tell WSH to treat the variable 
as a string and it seems to work on Win7 and WinXP.

Please try again using version 1.2.1-RC25.
