[debian-non-standard] Anyone using an ASUS wl500gp v2 ?

Perhaps you will need to build a newer kernel out of OpenWRT svn.

Are you familiar with compiling kernels? If yes, a serial cable to your 
ASUS would help a lot, as you could see why the boot process breaks.
