I'm not developer of sheepdog, but i try to use it in cloud hosting.
So i'm try to fix some things that i can fix.
I don't think that commits count saying something. I think that main
fact about projects liveliness - does it have users and developers,
and does they fix  bugs in code.
I'm choose sheepdog because easy of using , all nodes equal (does not
need mon, mds, and other nodes).
Also it have small code and easy to understand.
